Gum Disease: Early Signs You Should Never Ignore

Gum disease starts quietly, often without pain, but can lead to loose teeth and bone loss if left unchecked.

Healthy teeth need a strong foundation. Gum (periodontal) disease starts quietly, often without pain, but can lead to loose teeth and bone loss if left unchecked.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Bleeding gums: If your toothbrush or apple leaves pink stains, your gums are inflamed (gingivitis). Healthy gums do not bleed.
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis): Chronic bad breath that doesn't go away with mouthwash can indicate deep bacterial pockets.
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums: Gums should be firm and light pink, not puffy or dark red.
  • Receding gums: If your teeth look "longer," it means your gum tissue is pulling away, exposing sensitive roots.

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a professional cleaning and checkup immediately to reverse gum disease before it progresses.
